Project Description

"Art can cease to be a report on sensations and become a direct organization of higher sensations. It is a matter of producing ourselves, and not the things that enslave us." Guy Dedord, Internationale Situationniste 1.

CIRCULATION is a public art project that will allow you to collaborate with REPOhistory through this Web site. Your collaboration will transform this New York City-based art work into an international art network.

REPOhistory will create a multifaceted public art project in the streets of New York City. Graphic images, art objects, maps, a window display at Printed Matter Books in SOHO, and two public high school collaborations will explore the subject of human blood: first literally, as a physical substance that is collected, processed, stored, distributed; second figuratively, as a metaphor for identity with a variety of social, historical, and popular beliefs.

For several weeks beginning in February 2000, REPOhistory will circulate artworks by over thirty artists through the mail, over the Internet, on city streets and in the subways. CIRCULATION seeks to focus public awareness on the invisible yet vital urban resource of human blood banking as it flows through New York City. At the same time, CIRCULATION examines the ways in which a seemingly natural thing (blood) is socially articulated including its function as an extremely valuable commodity and its role in cultural issues, notions of racial purity and national identity.

In cyberspace you will be able to collaborate with us on a number of levels. REPOhistory will display all of the art work created for New York City with additional information provided. We will allow you to contribute stories and ideas in an open forum, modify existing imagery by REPOartist or submit you own imagery. Links to artists and other art collectives will also be provided. There will also be an email component based on the Surrealist game The Exquiste Corpse. The enhanced Web functionality will allow you interact with CIRCULATION and help determine what it will be. It is about "producing ourselves" by building structures, networks for the "direct organization of higher sensations."

Circulation has been made possible through the generosity of the National Endowment for the Arts, The Gunk Foundation, Puffin Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts and numerous friends and supporters. We also gratefully acknowledge the support from Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design.
